  Course Description:Covers the reading of highway, forest service, and topographical maps including symbols, legends, border information, and contour lines. Explores the use of magnetic compasses in an outdoor environment and functions that plot a course on maps. Supplemental navigation skills are included.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
         A.      Know how to read various types of maps and interpret appropriate map symbols.
         B.      Know the anatomy of a USGS quad map.
         C.      Know the parts and appropriate uses of various compasses
         D.      Design a five-mile route using a standard compass and a topographical map.
         E.      Draw a profile of a marked route on a topo map.
         F.      Know the differences between declination, inclination, and magnetic anomalies.
         G.      Understand the five D¿s of map and compass.
         H.      Find correct GPS positions using either Lat/Long or UTM systems.
         I.      Apply the skills and techniques of map and compass by successfully completing an orienteering exercise.
