STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Identify map symbols and colors
2. Interpret topographic lines
3. Interpret map border information
4. Use compasses to aid in backcountry navigation
5. Use bearings (azimuths), declination correction, and route planning for efficient backcountry travel
6. Apply map and field bearing rules for transferring bearings
7. Demonstrate proficiency in following and taking bearings, triangulation, lost procedures, pace, and orienting the topographic map to the actual terrain
8. Demonstrate proficiency in placing one’s position on topographic map using UTM coordinates and placing a position on map from given UTM coordinates
9. Appraise efficiency by selecting and following routes
