  Course Description:Explains the impact of environment, culture, and community on the child. Focuses on an ever-changing occupational status through the influences of performance skills. Provides the skills necessary to identify commonly seen diseases and disabilities and treatment techniques used in pediatrics to promote health and wellness. Identifies occupational therapy evaluation/assessment techniques and methods of intervention within the context and environment of health care and the community.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Explain how context and environmental influences can affect a child’s health and wellness when planning treatment.
 2. Explain Occupational Therapy’s role in prevention, education and the balance within areas of occupation, and safety for children within different contexts.
 3. Identify commonly seen pediatric disabilities and diagnosis and programs that can be used in individual and group treatment interventions.
 4. Select, adapt and sequence relevant occupations and purposeful activities that support the intervention goals to increase independence with performance skills.
 5. Identify and participate in the screening and assessment process and understand service competencies required for standardized and non-standardized tests.
 6. Assess interventions to reflect the changing needs of the child and collaborate on any modifications including recommendations for discharge.
 7. Identify the impact of society and policy on children and their learning.
 8. Identify and demonstrate how research can be obtained, utilized and evaluated in a variety of interventions.
 9. Identify the partnerships between the occupational therapist and the occupational therapy assistant in the pediatric setting.
