  Course Description:Provides the student with the practical experience necessary to identify commonly seen disabilities, aspects of health and wellness, evaluation/assessment techniques, and methods of treatment for the pediatric population from diverse backgrounds in collaboration with intra-professional and inter-professional team members.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Identify commonly seen signs, symptoms, and behaviors in a pediatric fieldwork setting and their effect on the client.
 2. Develop an awareness of occupational therapy and/or how occupational therapy functions in the pediatric setting.
 3. Identify screening and assessment techniques to identify the need for occupational therapy services.
 4. Exhibit awareness and knowledge of administration of screenings, assessments, and methods of recording through standardized and non-standardized assessments to indicate the need for occupational therapy services and the use of assessment results in intervention planning.
 5. Examine the meaning and dynamics of occupation, treatment media, and purposeful activity, including the interaction of: areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, and context/environment.
 6. Practice and adhere to professional behaviors, judgment, problem-solving, and self-initiating skills.
 7. Apply information learned in academia to formulate a written occupational profile and intervention plan on a client at the fieldwork site assigned, to include:
 a. Use of assessment information to formulate short and long term goals in the client’s areas of occupation.
 b. Gradation and adaptation of purposeful, client-centered activities to maximize function and independence of the client.
 c. Consideration of environmental and community effects as well as contexts, performance skills, and performance patterns on the client and their returning socio-cultural environment.
 8. Identify roles and treatment collaboration between the OT/OTA and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
 9. Identify opportunities to interact with persons of diverse backgrounds.
 10. Exhibit ethical behaviors as established in the Pueblo Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program’s Code of Student Ethics and the Occupational Therapy Ethics as described by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
 11. Exhibit professionalism with the Pueblo Community College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program’s dress code and the dress code standards of the fieldwork site.
 12. Demonstrate professional oral communication skills with team members and patients/clients/residents
 13. Demonstrate professional written communication skills for accountability and reimbursement.
 14. Establish effective interpersonal relationships with team members and clients. Understand the effects of health, disability, disease processes, and traumatic injury to the individual within a variety of contexts.
 15. Select, adapt, and sequence occupations and purposeful activities that support intervention goals and treatment plan as determined by the occupational therapist. Activities chosen should be client centered, focused on areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, and context/environment in order to maximize participation and independence of the client.
