Course Description: | Offers the 40 hour O.S.H.A. training requirement for working on hazardous waste sites, reviews chemical interactions and effects, with an emphasis on health and safety plans. Also includes use of personal protective apparatus and monitoring instruments. Sampling, handling, labeling, emergency responses, decontamination and "right to know" laws are covered. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. List and define various types of hazardous materials encountered in the field.
II. Discuss the basic aspects of chemistry of these substances, including reactivity, explosiveness, radioactivity.
III. Discuss the toxicity, both acute and chronic, of hazardous wastes, OSHA standards of exposure, how to recognize symptoms of toxicity, and appropriate first-aid measures.
IV. Discuss site management plans for health and safety.
V. Discuss and apply labeling standards, including `Material Safety Data Sheets`
VI. Discuss basic concepts of industrial hygiene.
VII. Discuss worker `right to know` laws.
