Course Description: | Provides basic instruction in ophthalmic surgical procedures and the technician¿s role in assisting in the management of pre- and post-operative patients. Emphasis is on understanding the different ophthalmologic procedures, and the technician¿s role in each. Advanced ophthalmic technical procedures such as ultrasonography (A-scan), calculation of Intraocular Lens Powers, and the use of the Potential Acuity Meter are also included. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Understand the technician¿s role in various ophthalmic surgical procedures.
II. Understand the anatomical and mechanical alterations made in common ophthalmic surgical procedures.
III. Understand the pre- and post-operative management of the ophthalmic surgical patient.
IV. Be able to accurately obtain an axial length measurement using an A-scan ultrasound machine.
V. Be able to calculate an appropriate Intraocular Lens Power given the A-scan measurement and the keratometer/ophthalmometer readings.
VI. Understand the importance of data validation and regression analysis of intraocular lens data for personalization of constants.
VII. Understand the differences between regression-based and theoretical IOL formulae.
VIII. Be able to correctly use the Potential Acuity Meter.
