The course includes basic microbiology and practical microbiology as it relates to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ophthalmic diseases. Medicare/Insurance Coding Procedures and insurance in ophthalmology are aslo included. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Be able to identify the difference between functional and structural ophthalmic and general diseases.
II. Identify some major diseases, with emphasis on their ophthalmologic effects.
III. Identify risk factors for certain diseases.
IV. Define vocabulary terms as they relate to pathology, microbiology, physiology, and anatomy.
V. Be familiar with the symptomatology of diseases covered, both ophthalmologic and general medicine.
VI. Understand the difference between infection and inflammation, and how these are treated.
VII. Understand the importance of proper insurance coding, both ICD-9 and CPT.
VIII. Be able to look up and record an ICD-9 diagnosis.
IX. Understand common ophthalmic disease entities and their usual symptomatology, course, and treatment.
X Be able to list the primary causes of blindness.
