  Long Title:Health Care Issues, Ethics, And The Law
  Course Description:Introduces the ophthalmic industry, basic knowledge, techniques, principles and procedures of delivery system. History and future of vision care explored. Students examine career opportunities, certification, licensing, and professional organizations, and distinguish between Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, and Ophthalmic Medical Technicians. Concerns of confidentiality, informed consent, reports required by law, tort liability issues, and day to day legal and ethical considerations arising through work are discussed, as well as orderly conflict resolution in the workplace, civil liability and other issues are discussed.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Understand and become familiar with the history of ophthalmics
 II.     Demonstrate the various tasks that a competent optician should be able to perform and will also be made aware of the knowledge that is necessary to properly perform these tasks.
 III.    Understand the various tasks that a competent OMT should be able to perform and will also be made aware of the knowledge and training that is necessary to perform those tasks correctly.
 IV.     Understand the laws, standards, and ethics that govern the Ophthalmic professions.
 V.      Define the legal and moral issues facing health care providers, including OMT¿s and opticians.
 VI.     Understand some of the differences between ¿chains¿ or ¿superstores¿ and independent Optical establishments, and between HMO¿s and private practices/ clinics.
 VII.    Demonstrate knowledge of various human ocular anomalies.
 VIII.   Understand the various organizations that promote Opticians, and Ophthalmic Medical Technicians.
 IX.     Understand state and national licensing and certifications organizations, the pros and cons of being licensed/certified as well as the political processes involved in obtaining licensing.
 X       Develop understanding of the various areas in which the Optician and the OMT may find employment.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
