  Course Description:Expands on the basic knowledge and skills learned in Clinical I and NUR 113 and NUR 114 to provide for the application of maternal-newborn and pediatric nursing theory, skills, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking necessary for safe, patient-centered nursing care to diverse patients of these populations. The course incorporates the legal and ethical responsibilities of the Practical Nurse in the care of maternal-newborn and pediatric patient populations.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Apply maternal-newborn and pediatric nursing concepts to provide safe, quality, patient-centered nursing care considering research, evidence, and patient preferences as the basis for the care. Deliver care within expected timeframe.
 2. Apply theory related to critical thinking and clinical judgment to make patient-centered care decisions.
 3. Recognize and discuss performance improvement/quality improvement activities used in the clinical setting to improve care for maternal-newborn and pediatric patient populations.
 4. Incorporate the Practical Nurse's role in collaboration with healthcare team members, the patient, and the patient's support persons to facilitate effective patient care when caring for maternal-newborn and pediatric patients.
 5. Begin to use information technology to support and communicate the planning and provision of patient care.
 6. Apply nursing theory to manage care for maternal-newborn and pediatric patients through the process of planning, organizing, and directing.
 7. Incorporate, within the scope of practice for the Practical Nurse,  professional, legal, and ethical guidelines when caring for maternal-newborn and pediatric patients.
 8. Apply concepts of a culture of caring to provide support, compassion and culturally-competent, holistic care for maternal-newborn and pediatric patients.

 I.  Major program concepts as they apply to care for childbearing adults and children, and their families, in a clinical setting, including:

 f. Collaboration/teamwork
 g. Information technology/ patient technology
 h. Role and scope of practice for Practical Nursing in the larger context of Nursing Practice
 
 II. Practice concepts of practical nursing for childbearing adults and children and their families, as they apply in a clinical setting, including:
 a. Teaching and learning
 b. Identification of community resources
 c. Health maintenance and promotion
 d. Pain management
 e. Nursing process
 f. Communication techniques
 
 III. Care of maternal-newborn and pediatric patients in a variety of care settings.
