  Course Description:Expands on the knowledge and skills learned in Clinical I to provide for the application of adult nursing theory, skills, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking necessary for safe, patient-centered nursing care to diverse adult patients experiencing common health alterations requiring medical/surgical interventions. The course incorporates the legal and ethical responsibilities of the Practical Nurse in the care of adults.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Apply medical/surgical nursing theory to provide safe, quality, patient-centered nursing care considering research, evidence, and patient preferences as the basis for the care of patients with common health alterations requiring various medical/surgical interventions.
 2. Apply theory related to critical thinking and clinical judgment to make patient-centered care decisions.
 3. Relate performance improvement/quality improvement activities used in the clinical setting to improved care for adult patients experiencing common health alterations requiring various medical/surgical interventions.
 4. Apply information about the Practical Nurse's role in collaboration with healthcare team members, the patient, and the patient's support persons when planning effective care for adult patients experiencing common health alterations requiring medical/surgical interventions.
 5. Employ, at a basic level, information technology to support and communicate the planning and provision of patient care.
 6. Apply medical/surgical nursing theory to manage care for adult patients experiencing common health alterations requiring medical/surgical interventions through the process of planning, organizing, and directing.
 7. Apply, within the scope of practice for the Practical Nurse, professional, legal, and ethical guidelines when caring for adult patients experiencing common health alterations requiring medical/surgical interventions.
 8. Apply concepts of a culture of caring to provide support, compassion, and culturally-competent, holistic care for adult patients experiencing common health alterations requiring medical/surgical interventions.

 f. Communication techniques
 
 III. Comprehensive care, within the scope of practice for the Practical Nurse, of adult patients experiencing common health alterations requiring medical/surgical interventions in a variety of care settings..
