  Course Description:Applies and expands on the knowledge and skills learned in the previous and concurrent courses to provide for the acquisition of basic nursing theory, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking necessary for safe, patient-centered nursing care to children and their families. The course incorporates the legal and ethical responsibilities of the Practical Nurse in the care of children.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Apply pediatric nursing concepts to safe, quality, and patient-centered nursing care considering research, evidence, and patient preferences as the basis for the care of pediatric patients and their families.
 2. Use critical thinking and clinical judgment to make patient-centered care decisions when caring for pediatric patients and their families.
 3. Relate performance improvement/quality improvement measures to improved care for pediatric patients and their families.
 4. Apply information about the Practical Nurse’s role in collaboration with healthcare team members, the patient, and the patient’s support persons when planning effective patient care for pediatric patients and their families.
 5. Discuss the use of information technology to support and communicate the planning and provision of patient care.
 6. Apply pediatric nursing theory to manage care for pediatric patients and their families through the process of planning, organizing, and directing.
 7. Demonstrate professional, legal, and ethical guidelines to the care of pediatric patients and their families within the scope of practice for the Practical Nurse.
 8. Apply concepts of a culture of caring to provide support, compassion and culturally-competent, holistic care to pediatric patients and their families.

 I. Major program concepts as they relate to care of pediatric patients, including:
 a. Safe, quality, patient-centered care;
 b. Research and evidence-based care
 c. Culture of caring
 d. Critical thinking and clinical judgment
 e. Performance improvement/quality improvement
 f. Collaboration/teamwork
 g. Information technology/patient technology
 h. The role and scope of practice for Practical Nursing in the larger context of Nursing Practice as related to care of the pediatric patient.
 
 II. Practice concepts of practical nursing as they relate to the care of pediatric patients, including:
 a. Teaching and learning;
 b.   Identification of community resources
 c.   Health maintenance and promotion;
 d    Pain management
 e.   Nursing process
 f.    Communication techniques.
 
 III. Practice concepts related to pediatric patients and their families including:
 a.   Growth and development
 b.   Safety
 c.   Identifying and reporting child abuse.
 
 IV.   Care related to members of the pediatric patient’s family.
 
  V. Disorders, dysfunctions, and anomalies of the pediatric patient.
