STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Describe main concepts of hospice and palliative care.
2. Describe the variety of professionals comprising a hospice team and their respective roles.
3. Identify Medicare and Medicaid benefits for hospice and palliative care patients.
4. Recognize signs and symptoms of dying and identify appropriate palliative interventions.

I. History and philosophy of hospice.
II. Trends in hospice and palliative care in the U.S.
III. The hospice interdisciplinary team members and the typical organization of a hospice program.
IV. Medicare and Medicaid hospice benefits.
V. Self-care strategies for health care professionals.
VI. Psychosocial and spiritual aspects of dying and the dying process.
