STANDARD COMPETENCIES
1. Locate field locations from map reading.
2. Identify field locations and mark the location on USGS topographical map.
3. Learn how to use the following equipment: UTM slot tools, English map grids, waypointer scales, grid locaters and lensatic compasses.
4. Navigate through the landscape avoiding areas of potential danger, such as cliffs, wetlands, etc.
5. Use the USGS 1:24000 to plan enforcement efforts through the application of knowing how wildlife movement patterns are influenced
by elevation, terrain, aspect, and slope.
6. Use the USGS 1:24000 map to determine landscape parameters that affect management strategies for wildlife and associated habitats.
7. Determine and describe through coordinate systems the locations of any place, point, or feature located on a map.
8. Determine and describe location, size, and legal descriptions of land/water parcels.
9. Navigate successfully in the wilderness to a predefined location in both light and dark.

I. Lensatic Compass Use
a. Parts of the compass
b. Orienting a map
c. Taking an azimuth
d. Use over rough terrain, darkness or in limited visibility
II. Map Reading:
a. Co-ordinate/location systems
i. Determine and describe through coordinate systems the locations of any place, point, or feature located on a map.
b. Projection terminology.
c. USGS 1:24000 features and symbols
d. Use of UTM slot tool, English map grids, waypointer scales and grid locaters
III. Using a Map and Compass together
a. Use triangulation to determine location
b. Magnetic declination
c. Ploting routes
IV. Apply these skills to natural resource issues
a. Determine landscape parameters that affect management strategies for wildlife and associated habitats.
b. Utilize scenarios to plan enforcement efforts through application of knowing how wildlife movement patterns are
influenced by elevation, terrain, aspect, and slope.
c. Locate research plots
d. Mark locations for research, enforcement, habitat, etc on a map.
V. Practical exercises
a. Successfully navigate walkabout circuit
b. Successfully complete night navigation exercise
c. Successfully complete final field exercise.
