Course Description: | Describes the origin, types, collection, handling, treatment, and disposal of various types of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. Sanitary landfill construction, land surface application, and mechanical, thermal and biological processing will be covered. Methods for waste treatment will be discussed. The basic steps of risk management will be covered. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Define solid waste and be able to give the physical and chemical parameters of such
II. Identify the activities and industries which general solid wastes
III. Describe and discuss the methods for dealing with solid waste,
IV. including:
A. Collection, transportation and handling
B. Thermal processing and incineration
C. Biological processing, composting and hydrolysis
D. The use and design of a sanitary landfill
E. The use and design of other surface land applications
F. Disposal at sea practices
V. List the types of hazardous wastes: toxic, radioactive, flammable,
VI. explosive and biological.
VII. Discuss, define, compare and contrast suitable waste disposal methods for each waste type, especially incineration.
VIII. Explain input and output (air pollution) aspects of incineration.
IX. Discuss and apply aspects of risk management.
X Discuss site remediation methods and practices.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Definitions of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes.
II. Identification of the sources or generators of wastes.
III. Methods and requirements involved with the transport and disposal of wastes.
IV. Alternatives for disposal.
V. Evolving technologies for disposal methods.
VI. Legislative requirements in regards to waste site disposal methods and reclamation.
