STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Define the basic elements of jazz music (dynamics, timbre, rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form) and recognize their use in musical compositions.
II. Identify most jazz musical instruments by sight and sound.
III. Demonstrate understanding of cultural aspects that influence jazz styles.
IV. Define and identify the various genres of jazz musical composition.
V. Illustrate knowledge of various jazz musical forms applied to instrumental and vocal composition.
VI. Characterize music of Traditional, Swing, Bop, Hard Bop, Cool, Free/Avant-Garde, Jazz-Rock Fusion, and current jazz styles.
VII. Identify representative jazz compositions as to period, genre, instrumentation, and possible composer.
VIII. Recall important jazz composers/musicians/band leaders from various historical periods and list their most important achievements.
IX. Identify major technological developments in jazz.
X Critique and synthesize the information given in the book and in supplemental readings and apply written material to new situations.
XI. Write and speak clearly and logically in presentations and essays.
XII. Demonstrate the ability to select and apply contemporary forms of technology to solve problems or compile information.
