STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Define the following basic elements of music and demonstrate the ability to recognize their use in a musical composition: melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, meter, dynamics, timbre
2. Identify most musical instruments by sight and sound
3. Define and demonstrate the ability to identify the various genres of musical composition
4. Identify various musical forms that are applied to both instrumental and vocal composition
5. Characterize music of the following periods in music history: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical Romantic, 20th Century
6. Compare and contrast various attitudes towards music and musical composition in various periods
7. Identify representative compositions as to period, genre, instrumentation, and possible composer
8. Recall important composers from various historical periods and list their most important achievements
9. Read, analyze and apply written material to new situations.
10. Write and speak clearly and logically in presentations and essays
11. Demonstrate the ability to select and apply contemporary forms of technology to solve problems or compile information
