  Course Description:Introduces the basics of music theory. Course designed to help the beginning music student, or those students with limited background in music theory, study the basic elements of music. Topics include notation, rhythm, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, beginning level melodic and rhythm dictation, ear-training and sight singing skills.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Identify basic elements of music notation, including pitch, rhythm, meter, and key signatures.
 2. Demonstrate working knowledge of major and minor scales.
 3. Understand and identify key signatures along with various transpositions.
 4. Demonstrate the ability to correctly identify melodic and harmonic intervals.
 5. Demonstrate the ability to build major, minor, augmented, diminished and V7 chords.
 6. Understand the use and function of basic chord progressions.
 7. Identify basic chord progressions, cadences, and form in various music scores.
 8. Demonstrate beginning level melodic and rhythmic dictation skills.
 9. Demonstrate beginning level sight singing skills.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 1. Pitch notation.  Staff, clef, note names, chromatic alteration, enharmonic.
 2. Rhythm notation.   Duration, meter, and tempo.
 3. Scales, keys, and intervals.
 4. Chords and Chord Qualities.  Major, Minor, Augmented, Diminished, and Dom 7th chords in root position and inversions.
 5. Chord symbols
 6. Diatonic triads in major and minor keys.
 7. Introduction to Roman numeral analysis.
 8. Principles of harmonization and chord progression.
 9. Cadences and basic introduction to musical form.
 10. Rhythm dictation in simple and compound meters.
 11. Melodic dictation in diatonic major and minor keys.
 12. Interval dictation of perfect, major and minor intervals.
 13. Sight Sing diatonic major and minor melodies using stepwise motion
