  Course Description:Introduces theory and techniques of therapeutic massage, including understanding of physiological benefits of massage as well as proper body mechanics and appropriate draping. Focuses on basic strokes of Swedish massage. Students also learn techniques of seated massage.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1.      Recognize therapeutic massage as part of an integrated health care system.
 2.     Know the multicultural history of massage and the theoretical bases for different kinds of bodywork.
 3.    Describe the physiological and psycho-emotional benefits of massage.
 4.     Conduct oneself according to the professional and ethical standards of massage therapy.
 5.      Work comfortably in a variety of settings with clientele who have different physical conditions and needs.
 6.     Take a medical history and determine appropriate application of massage for the client.
 7.    Perform therapeutic massage, using basic techniques drawn from Shiatsu/Acupressure, Swedish and Integrative Massage.
 8.   Use proper body mechanics when performing massage.
 9.     Communicate effectively with the client before, during, and after the massage session.
 10.       Make a commitment to personal wellness, developing and using a consistent program of self-care.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      The effects, benefits, and indications related to Massage.
         A.      Describe the physical & emotional benefits of Massage.
         B.      List the primary anatomical and physiological systems enhanced by massage.
         C.      Discuss the mental and emotional effects of massage.
         D.      Analyze the mechanisms that contribute to the effects of massage.
         E.      Utilize visualization techniques to project the benefits of massage for special populations.
 II.     The contraindications and cautions related to massage during pregnancy
         A.      Palpate a/o avoid endangerment sites on the anterior and posterior body appropriately.
         B.      List the general principles for safely around endangerment sites.
         C.      Describe the primary contraindications for performing therapeutic massage.
 III.    Swedish Massage Form
         A.      Demonstrate the essential general and specific strokes in Swedish Massage.
         B.      Describe the primary therapeutic benefit of each stroke type in Swedish Massage.
         C.      Describe the therapeutic principles and procedures that constitute Swedish Massage.
         D.      Apply Swedish Massage form in eight supervised massages in the CCD Massage Therapy Clinic.
 IV.     Chair Massage Form
         A.      Describe the primary therapeutic benefit of each stroke type in Chair Massage.
         B.      Describe the therapeutic principles and procedures that constitute Chair Massage.
         C.      Perform three supervised Chair Massages on clients in Various settings.
 V.      PNF
         A.      Discuss the utilization of PNF stretching.
         B.      List the types of muscle contractions.
         C.      Describe the tenets of Sherrington¿s Laws.
         D.      Demonstrate single muscle PNF stretches for the upper body.
         E.      Demonstrate single muscle PNF stretches for the lower body.
