  Course Description:Prepares the student to code correctly, and optimize reimbursements for a full range of medical services by expanding coverage of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, official coding guidelines, APG`s, APC`s, DRGs, Medicare fraud and abuse.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Demonstrate the ability to use the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD) manuals.
 2. Identify conventions of the ICD.
 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set(UHDDS)
 4. Discuss the principles necessary to select an ICD 9-CM or CPT code.
 5. Differentiate between coding classifications.
 


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      Identify the format used in the ICD, and CPT coding manuals.
 II.     List the correct diagnostic and procedural codes for various health statements.
 III.    Compare and contrast inpatient versus outpatient coding situations.
 IV.     Apply proper codes to various coding situations.
 V.      Consult various resources to assign the appropriate codes.
