  Course Description:Explains the basic skills, principles, and techniques for the staining, culturing, isolation, and identification of microorganisms of medical importance. Student will interpret clinical specimens to provide data correlation including diagnostics and treatment. Techniques for determining antibiotic sensitivity will be demonstrated. Public health, safety and quality control will also be emphasized.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Evaluate patient specimens for acceptability for analysis.
 2. Determine proper media, temperature, and atmospheric requirements for the growth and culture of suspected pathogens.
 3. Distinguish between normal flora and pathogenic organisms based upon colony characteristics.
 4. Characterize key microscopic and macroscopic features of bacterial pathogens and normal flora isolates.
 5. Perform and interpret various staining techniques.
 6. Compare and contrast clinical laboratory procedures, interpret data, and predict the pathogen isolated.
 7. Perform and interpret various methods of antibiotic susceptibility to provide correct patient therapy data.
