STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Define the role of the Phlebotomist and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in the full scope of the patient and healthcare team
2. Apply OSHA safety standards at all times
3. Identify pre-analytical conditions that affect biological specimens and assess their suitability for analysis
4. Select, assemble and prepare venipuncture equipment when presented with a clinical situation.
5. Explain and perform the following techniques using common and appropriate hematology terminology for:
A. dermal punctures
B. manual hematocrit
C. peripheral smear preparation
D. erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
E. reticulocyte preparation
F. hematology analyzer operation
6. Demonstrate fulfillment of quality control standards within the required deviation during operation and maintenance of hematology analyzers
7. Assess Complete Blood Count (CBC) and Scatterplot results for acceptability
8. Identify critical or abnormal values of hematology tests
9. Describe the functions of the circulatory system and identify the arteries, veins and nerves present in the area of venipuncture sites
10. Perform and document the following tasks:
A. analyze CBCs
B. perform manual differentials on normal smears
C. prepare acceptable peripheral blood smears
D. perform manual hematocrits
E. perform manual ESR
F. perform successful venipunctures
G. obtain blood from fingersticks
11. Define common medical and laboratory terms and abbreviations for effective communication
