  Course Description:Focuses on coal mine gasses, ventilation, atmosphere detection, strata and methane control, coal mine dust and noise testing procedures, diesel regulations and compliance. This course prepares the student for the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, Colorado Coal Mine Examiner¿s Board Underground Mine Foreman examination.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the pertinent 30 CFR Federal Mining Law -Parts 48, 50, 70, and 75.  (I)
 II.     Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the required examination procedures.  (II, VII)
 III.    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the importance and use of accurate records.  (II, VII)
 IV.     Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the use of gas and air measuring devices.  (III)
 V.      Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of mine gases and related parameters.  (III)
 VI.     Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the math skills required to complete ventilation quantities, areas and velocities; gas liberation and dilution; slopes and elevations; volumes and weights; and, anemometer correction factors.  (IV)
 VII.    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of mine maps and mine ventilation of a multiple mining section mine.  (V)


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      Instruction in the Federal Mining Laws that include practice tests of multiple choice answers and ¿hunt and find¿ type questions.  Also, a basic review of the regulations will stress the critical components of the regulations.  These regulations include training, accident reporting, health, diesel, and general safety requirements (ventilation, roof control, electrical, fire prevention, explosives, etc.)
 II.     Instruction of procedures, demonstration of instruments, and review of actual record books for required examinations and equipment required for those examinations.
 III.    Instruction of mine gases and the relevance of each gas by its health, safety, or explosive characteristic and method to determine specific gravity of each gas.
 IV.     Extensive instruction in applying mine mathematical formulas to sample problems.  The training concentrates on ¿showing of work¿, ¿drawing a picture¿ from written problem, ¿writing the knowns and formulas¿, ¿carrying units¿ and ¿neatness¿ for graders to understand their process and allow for partial credit if appropriate.
 V.      Extensive instruction and use of practice mine ventilation maps.  Instruction stresses common techniques to ventilating the mine (logical belt placements, bleeder system design, and airway selections) and consistent administrative methods (Same colors used for same type of airways, etc.).
 VI.     Completion of the State test application with all required documents and summaries of experience.
 VII.    Review of the expectations of a certified mine foreman or fireboss and the legal requirements that the holders of such competency papers are governed by.
