Course Description: | Teaches persons with previous surface miner experience who are (1) newly employed by the operator, (2) transferred to the mine, (3) experienced surface miners transferred from underground to surface; or (4) returning to the mine after an absence of more than 12 months. This course complies with 30 CFR 48.26 |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Explain procedures for riding in mine conveyances, transportation for miners and materials, and the use of mine communication systems, warning signals and directional signs. (I)
II. Demonstrate the proper use of fire extinguishing equipment. (II)
III. Explain the hazards of working near and around highwalls, spoil banks, pits. (III)
IV. Explain the requirements for proper illumination of the workplace. (III)
V. Identify hazards in the workplace. (IV)
VI. Explain the general causes of accidents and how to prevent reoccurrence. (V)
VII. Explain the purpose of taking dust, noise and other health measurements at the mine. (VI)

I. Transportation controls and communication systems.
II. Escape and emergency evacuation plans; firewarning and firefighting.
III. Ground controls; working in areas of hi9ghwalls, water hazards, pits, and spoil banks; illumination and night work.
