Course Description: | Teaches students seeking first-time employment in the mining industry as a surface miner. This course follows 30 CFR 48.25 training of new miner requirements. Topics include instruction in such areas as miners¿ rights, health and safety, first aid, transportation, fires and explosions and surface mining methods. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Explain rights granted miners under 30 CFR. (I)
II. Demonstrate proper use of respiratory protection devices. (II)
III. Explain transportation systems at surface coal mines. (III)
IV. Explain communication systems, warning signals, and directional signs used in surface mining. (III)
V. Explain the emergency evacuation plan in a surface coal mine. (V)
VI. Demonstrate proper use of fire fighting equipment. (V)
VII. Recognize unsafe highwall conditions, water hazards and other ground control hazards. (VI)
VIII. Explain the purpose of taking dust, noise, and other health related measurements. (VII)
IX. Recognize and avoid hazards present in the workplace. (VIII)
X Identify and explain electrical hazards. (IX)
XI. Demonstrate acceptable first aid methods. (X)
XII. Identify explosive material used in the mining industry and explain the hazards blasting. (XI)
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Instruction in the statutory rights of miners and their representative under the Act; authority and responsibility of supervisors.
II. Self-rescue and respiratory devices.
III. Transportation controls and communication systems.
IV. Introduction to the work environment.
V. Escape and emergency evacuation plans; firewarning and firefighting.
VI. Ground control; working in areas of highwalls, water hazards, pits and spoil banks; illumination and night work.
VII. Health.
VIII. Hazard recognition.
IX. Electrical hazards.
X First aid.
XI. Explosives.
XII. Health and safety aspects of the tasks to which the new miner will be assigned.
