Course Description: | Presents the fundamental principles and applications of traditional 2D character animation. Students develop an awareness and appreciation of the depth of skill and abilities required to create 2D animation. Students compare/contrast 2D skills application toward the creation of 3D animation and develop the fundamental skills of character animation such as pencil testing and evaluation, ink and paint production and compositing. Students produce a finished piece of original animation, highlighting the skills acquired in class. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Compose and design characters and scenes using visual design techniques.
2. Produce a written treatment, storyboard and layouts.
3. Create backgrounds from source materials created in various software applications or from digital capture stations.
4. Develop frame-by-frame image production including ongoing pencil testing.
5. Examine digital ink and paint compositing and audio post-production.
6. Apply the fundamental principles of high quality character and effects animation as emphasized by the
instructor throughout the production process.
7. Utilize appropriate software technology, resulting in production values consistent with current professional industry standards.
8. Form functional creative teams that replicate an industrial production environment. The team will develop
the project vision and define the steps and tasks to create a 2D animated short.
9. Develop and complete a 2D animated short, using traditional animation fundamentals.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Introduction to 2D animation theory, character design, and background design fundamentals.
II. Pre-production basics.
A. Assess production goals, and evaluate overviews, begin development of treatment.
B. Presentation of treatment to peers for review and evaluation
C. Delegation of tasks for storyboard and layout production
D. Develop a production schedule and group agreement on deadlines.
III. Production Basics
A. Develop detailed storyboards and layout
B. Assignment of scenes to individual animators
C. Sketching for 2D animation
D. Use of digital capture stations, light boards and peg system
E. Pencil testing and evaluation
F. Peer review and evaluation of pencil testing
G. Ink and paint production fundamentals discussed
H. Delegation of tasks and deadlines for ink and paint production
IV. Peer review and evaluation of ink and paint production
V. Post Production Basics
A. Discuss final compositing tasks, compositing and audio software including rendering capacity
B. Delegation of final compositing tasks to team members
C. Peer review and evaluation of animation rough-cut composite
D. Final composite and render of animation
E. Viewing and peer review of animation
