STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Recognize and locate the controls.
II. Recognize the necessity of personal safety gear.
III. Recognize necessity of securely clamping work.
IV. Explain necessity of keeping hands and fingers clear of rotating cutter.
V. Recognize danger of automatic feeds.
VI. Recognize the need to keep fingers away from the arbor bearing when positioning the support arm.
VII. Recognize the need to turn off the power before removing or tightening the arbor nut.
VIII. Recognize the need to position the support when the arbor nut is removed or tightened.
IX. Name the Principal Parts of the Horizontal Mill:
A. Overarm
B. Spindle
C. Column
D. Table
E. Saddle
F. Knee
G. Base
X Discuss the function of each of the above parts.
XI. Identify the various types of cutters used on the horizontal milling machine.
XII. Demonstrate alignment of the vise (or work, if clamped) using an indicator or square.
XIII. Demonstrate securing the work.
XIV. Demonstrate mounting cutters.
XV. Hold tolerances of plus/minus .002 inches):
A. Demonstrate slab milling.
B. Demonstrate face milling.
C. Demonstrate end milling.
D. Demonstrate side milling.
E. Demonstrate slotting.
