 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Demonstrate reasons for identifying the culture to which a work belongs.
 II.     Demonstrate reasons for identifying the literary period to which a work belongs.
 III.    Demonstrate awareness of socio-historical conditions in a culture that influences the development of particular forms, modes, genres, and themes.
 IV.     Read and demonstrate an understanding of major literary forms, genres, and themes.
 V.      Recognize basic forms, modes, genres, and themes recurring from one period or culture to another.
 VI.     Compare major stages in historical development of form, modes, genres, and themes.
 VII.    Examine socio-historical conditions in a culture that influences the development of particular ideas.
 VIII.   Provide reasoned assessment of the influence and accomplishments of some individual writers, in their own and subsequent times.
 IX.     Write and speak clearly and logically in presentations and essays.
 X       Demonstrate the ability to select and apply contemporary forms of technology to solve problems or compile information.
