STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Demonstrate simultaneous interpreting and transliterating skills at the appropriate depth of processing needed to
achieve message equivalence.
2. Simultaneously interpret unprepared complex material from English to ASL.
3. Simultaneously interpret unprepared complex material from ASL to English.
4. Simultaneously transliterate unprepared complex material.
5. Demonstrate ability to recognize miscues and effectively apply corrections in a seamless manner.
6. Demonstrate simultaneous transliterating and interpreting voicing production skills while using a microphone.
7. Demonstrate recognition and incorporation of various signing modalities during the interpreting process.
8. Demonstrate culturally appropriate turn-taking management.
9. Implement proficient teaming skills
10. Demonstrate inclusion of feedback received form instructors, peers, and self-analysis in subsequent work.
11. Apply interpreting and transliterating skills to real-world applications.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Processing skills and management:
a. use of preparation techniques, anticipation and prediction, speaker and audience assessment
b. effective depth of processing (lexical, phrasal, sentential, and textual), message analysis, and visualization techniques
c. target message formulation and execution
d. coherence (prosody, cohesion, transitions) and analysis of dynamic equivalency
II. Simultaneous interpreting:
a. unprepared culturally rich complex materials.
b. lexicon, syntax, and deictic markers (person, place/space, temporal, discourse, social)
c. ASL mouthing, non-manual markers, execution, register, prosody, fluency, speaker affect, cultural expansion and cultural mediation
III. Simultaneous transliteration: management of process and production.
IV. Skills assessment:
a. use of effective feedback skills
b. analysis of sample work product of self and peers
V. Miscue and repair: application of appropriate interpreting processing models.
VI. Support techniques: team interpreting
