  Course Description:Provides the student with knowledge of transliterating techniques and to develop skills in transliterating spoken English into signed English. The student is introduced to the concept of transliterating and the differences in transliterating and interpreting.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Explain the differences between transliterating and interpreting.
 II.     Identify the different sign systems that may be used in transliterating.
 III.    Define the target populations for which transliterating may be most appropriate.
 IV.     Describe types of situations/settings where transliterating may be used.
 V.      Demonstrate sufficient sign vocabulary and appropriate sign choices for transliterating..
 VI.     Demonstrate ability to mouth English words while transliterating.
 VII.    Demonstrate appropriate execution and fluency in both signing and fingerspelling.
 VIII.   Apply appropriate ASL features such as: non manual markers for grammar and speaker affect, use of space and body shifting, eye gaze..
 IX.     Incorporate appropriate processing for effective target message delivery.
 X       Minimize the number of deletions from the source message.
 XI.     Demonstrate appropriate coping skills in process management..
 XII.    Identify own strengths and weaknesses in specified areas of transliterating.
 XIII.   Discuss and design methods for reinforcing strengths and rectifying weaknesses.
 XIV.    Examine methods for providing feedback, and establish peer relationships conducive to providing and receiving feedback.

 II.     BASIC SKILLS:  Appropriate and Consistent Use of Interpreting vs. Transliterating, Conceptual Accuracy, Mouthing, Clarity, Fingerspelling, Non-manual Markers,  and Pacing/Fluency.
 III.    SKILLS ASSESSMENT:  Self-assessment and Development of Feedback Skills.
