 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Specify the factors that determine the choices available for specialized and technical settings.
 Establish a foundation for incorporating specialized and technical signs in various settings.
 II.     Explain the rationale for the development of MCE systems.
 III.    Discuss the differences between languages and codes.
 IV.     Explain the basic differences between American Sign Language (ASL) and various manual codes for English.
 V.      Demonstrate an ability to determine when to initialize sign.
 VI.     Demonstrate ability to apply appropriate rules for signs using SEE II criteria.
 VII.    Demonstrate a working knowledge for at least 60-75 different SEE II signs that are commonly used by this system
 VIII.   Demonstrate ability to understand MCE signs, which may be used in communication by the sender.
 IX.     Develop the ability to apply specialized and/or technical signs from various disciplines. The following are some areas that may be included:  computer technology, sexuality, drug use, math, science, social science, English, industrial arts, sports, and other miscellaneous categories selected by instructor.
 X       Incorporate technical signs in various texts.
 XI.     Identify what materials are available and where to access materials for technical terminology.
 XII.    Analyze strategies for effective interpreting when media is used and within the performing arts arena.

 I.      INTRODUCTION:  Philosophy
 II.     MANUALLY CODED ENGLISH:  History/Philosophy, Languages vs. Codes, Purpose, Initializing Signs, and Word Groups, Affixes, and Sign Vocabulary.
 III.    SPECIALIZED SETTINGS:  Communication Options For Media and the Arts.
 IV.     SPECIALIZED AND/OR TECHNICAL TERMINOLOGY:  Vocabulary Expansion.
