  Course Description:Surveys the factors that contribute to defining Deaf persons as members of a cultural minority. This course will look at the impact of language on the culture as well as the role of norms, values, traditions, and minority groups within Deaf culture. Attention will also be given to identity and membership in Deaf culture.

 I.      Define Deaf culture and Deaf community.
 II.     Compare and contrast pathological and cultural views.
 III.    Define acculturation and enculturation.
 IV.     Describe the acculturation and enculturation processes for Deaf people.
 V.      Define oppressed and oppressor peoples.
 VI.     Discuss the impact of the roles of oppressed and oppressor peoples have on the deaf community.
 VII.    Explain the role of language use and preference.
 VIII.   Describe the impact of shared experience on identity.
 IX.     Discuss bilingualism and biculturalism.

 XXXIII. Recognize the occurrence of conflict and discuss methods of conflict resolution within the Deaf Community.

 XXXV.   Discuss personal feelings of ethnocentrism and external conflict faced during inter-cultural interactions.
