  Course Description:Provides a more in-depth study of the field of interpreting expanding on the basics introduced in IPP 121. Lecture/discussion sessions will address ethical decision-making, and cultural issues, as well as the various settings in which interpreters work. Students will have opportunities to observe various professional interpreters throughout the semester.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Discuss the role and responsibility of interpreters in various settings.
 II.     Observe interpreters in various settings and analyze the work and the decisions made by interpreters on the job.
 III.    Identify the process by which one analyzes ethical dilemmas in terms of weighing the short and long-term consequences and the pros and cons for each decision.
 IV.     Apply the decision-making process to various ethical dilemmas.
 V.      Develop methods and techniques for recording information gathered during observations.
 VI.     Analyze specific information gathered:  sign choices, word choices, interpreting techniques, situation assessment, protocol, as well as intracultural and intercultural aspects.
 VII.    Identify common acronyms used in the field of interpreting and within the Deaf community.
 VIII.   Describe various methods of telephone interpreting.
 IX.     Discuss methods for achieving successful communication when telephone interpreting.
 X       Describe the role of the interpreter at different levels of education.
 XI.     Discuss basic issues related to educational interpreting.
