  Course Description:Acquaints the student with the basics of interpreting. This will enable the student to understand what interpreting involves, and the professional requirements for being an interpreter. In this course, the student is introduced to the code of ethics, situation assessment required for effective interpreting, and certification of interpreters.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Distinguish between a signer and an interpreter.
 II.     Identify various reasons people become interpreters and analyze own reason(s) for choosing interpreting as a career.
 III.    Identify and explain the various methods of communication in the visual communication continuum.
 IV.     Identify and define various terms related to deafness and the field of interpreting.
 V.      Describe the traits that make a good interpreter and discuss deaf consumers perspectives of what makes a good interpreter.
 VI.     Explain the purpose of RID.
 VII.    Identify the various certificates offered by RID and explain what type and level of skill is required for each.
 VIII.   Identify other certification systems within the field of interpreting.
 IX.     Analyze and determine considerations for applying the tenants of the RID Code of Ethics in interpreting.
 X       Explain what situation assessment involves with regard to:  the consumer(s), the interpreter, the physical setting, and the nature of the interpreting assignment.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      THE ROLE OF THE INTERPRETER:  Interpreter vs. Signer, Motivations for Becoming an Interpreter, Visual Communication Continuum, Interpreting Terminology, and Qualities of a Good Interpreter.
 II.     THE REGISTRY OF INTERPRETERS FOR THE DEAF (RID):  History and Purpose.
 III.    CODE OF ETHICS:  Confidentiality, Impartiality, Faithful Interpreting (thought, intent and spirit of speaker, Discretion, Compensation and Professional Development.
 IV.     SITUATION ASSESSMENT:  Contextual and logistical considerations.
 V.      CERTIFICATION:  The Need for Certification and Types of Certification.
