  Course Description:Teaches and applies basic knowledge of interior lighting technology and design. Content includes lamp classifications, color rendition, how lighting sources effect perception of space, how to compute and control proper lighting levels, and how to communicate design information by means of a reflected ceiling plan and luminaire schedule focusing on both residential and commercial interiors.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I. Recognize, locate and specify a variety of luminaires and appropriate use for Residential and Commercial projects
 II. Recognize and specify appropriate lamps for proper lighting levels and color rendition for Residential and Contract projects
 III. Design and create the lighting layouts for typical residential and commercial interiors through reflected ceiling plans and luminaire schedules
 IV. Understand basic electricity terminology & code standards
 V. Develop familiarity with local lighting resources as well as development of research skills for luminairies and pricing
 VI. Understand processes of working on a project with electrical professionals, including engineers and electricians
 VII. Research and understand correct implementation of luminaire types, locations and quantities, in combination with lighting controls, based on energy efficiency and sustainability.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I. Understanding various types of luminaires and appropriate use:
 I. Study and understand types of various luminaire fixtures
 II. Study and understand appropriate locations and uses for luminaire types based on residential and commercial projects
 II. Specifying appropriate lamping
 I. Understand different lamping types and their appropriate applications
 II. Research and understand lighting levels and color rendition for residential and commercial projects
 III. Create lighting layouts for typical residential and commercial interiors
 I. Develop reflected ceiling plans and luminaire schedules for residential and commercial projects.
 II. Understand switching layouts and how to coordinate with lighting layouts
 IV. Understand basic electricity terminology & basic code compliance
 I. Develop understanding of basic vocabulary, regarding lighting and lighting layouts, for residential and commercial projects
 II. Research and understand basic code requirements for electrical placement, luminaire placement and quantities
 V. Research development
 I. Develop familiarity with local lighting resources and how to work with these resources.
 II. Develop research skills for researching luminairies and pricing, based on residential and commercial projects
 VI. Working with electrical professionals
 I. Understand processes of working on a project with electrical professionals, including engineers and electricians
 II. Understand the process of specifying, ordering and installation
 VII. Energy Efficiency
 I. Research and develop lighting layouts which provide maximum lighting level, based on residential and commercial projects, based on daylighting, dimming capabilities and lamp types and quantities.
