I. Use, and design to, applicable laws and codes as they pertain to commercial spaces
II. Understand typical commercial client design needs, furnishings, equipment and business operations based on the various types of Commercial Design including Medical/Healthcare, Hospitality, Corporate and Retail
III. Create a portfolio quality commercial project by focusing on the complete design process.
IV. Develop a client program and design concept to be implemented through design development, space planning, color selections, finish and material selections, furniture and textile selections, custom design elements and final presentation.
V. Understand and produce construction documentation drawings and specifications for a commercial project using standards and techniques as they pertain to Commercial Design
VI. Focus on current research regarding sustainability as it pertains to Commercial Design.
VIII. Understand furniture systems: their components, basic assembly and design/installation requirements
IX. Use AutoCAD and Microsoft Office software to produce project documents
X. Use hand sketching skills and/or computer software to create 3-dimensional examples of areas of focus within commercial project.
XI. Develop research skills by using design/product showrooms and online research libraries as sources for materials & finishes, furniture & textiles, lighting and accessories.
XII. Focus on professionalism through final project presentation including the creation of final project boards.
XIII. Discuss current trends and technologies in commercial design
I. Codes and Standards
a. Review and discuss appropriate building codes and ADA standards as they pertain to commercial interior projects
b. Review appropriate finishes as they relate to codes and ADA standards for commercial interior projects
II. Commercial Project Specifics
a. Review and expand on specific requirements of commercial products
i. Focus on building codes, ADA standards, human factors, appropriate FF&E, business operations, design creativity
III. Commercial Project Creation
a. Create a commercial design project using the Design Process and implementing problem solving to create functional and creative design solutions
b. Implement drafting skills to create complete construction documents and FF&E specifications
c. Implement 3 dimensions sketching skills to represent project elements
d. Review professional presentation techniques
e. Create professional presentation boards
IV. Drawing Standards and Technology
a. Practice creating 3 dimensional conceptual drawings through hand sketching and computer techniques
V. Environmental practices and materials
a. Describe the impact of design on the environment related to commercial design projects
VI. Research
a. Visit and the understand policies of design and product showrooms
b. Discuss techniques for researching online and ordering samples
c. Discuss and implement current trends, products and technologies in commercial design projects.
d. Provide classroom visits from vendors and product representatives
VII. Budgets and Specifications
a. Discuss and apply research of costs associated with commercial finishes, furnishings and equipment
b. Create basic specifications associated with commercial finishes, furnishings and equipment
