  Course Description:Development of a residential studio project, with an emphasis on universal design and sustainability, by implementing the design process. The course requires research and application of residential design solutions through space planning, furniture & finish selections & specifications, estimating quantities & costs and understanding budget. The course includes the development of construction documentation and professional presentation techniques.

 I. Generate a basic contract for design services
 II.     Generate a design program, client profile and overall design concept
 III.    Understand and generate a basic purchase order, client invoice and project time sheet
 IV.     Create a residential project by focusing on the design process.  After developing a proposal, contract and client program; create schematic designs, space plans and final  construction documentation of plans & details
 V.      Focus on current research regarding sustainability and universal design standards.
 VI.     Create and follow design concept through implementation of space planning, color selections, finish and material selections, furniture and textile selections and final presentation.
 VIII.   Develop research skills by using design/product showrooms and online research libraries as sources for materials & finishes, furniture & textiles, lighting and accessories.
 IX.     Focus on professionalism through final project presentation
 XII.    Discuss current trends and technologies in residential design


 I. Residential Project
 a. Create a residential design project using knowledge of the Design Process & Design Elements
 b. Implement drafting skills to create construction documents
 c. Implement 3 dimensions sketching skills to represent project elements
 d. Review professional presentation techniques
 e. Create professional presentation boards
 II. Residential Business Practice
 a. Develop a client contract, for design services, based on a residential project
 b. Develop a purchase order and client invoice, based on finishes, furnishings or equipment, for a residential project
 c. Discuss and implement the tracking of hours for a residential project
 III. Programming
 a. Develop a complete client profile and overall design concept for a residential project.
 b. Implement design concept throughout duration of residential project through planning, design and FF&E selections.
 IV. Environmental practices and materials
 a. Describe the impact of design on the environment
 b. Illustrate the appropriate use of materials for residential projects
 c. Implement drafting skills to create construction documents
 V. Research
 a. Visit and the understand policies of design and product showrooms
 b. Discuss techniques for researching online and ordering samples
 c. Discuss and implement current trends, products and technologies in residential design projects.
 d. Provide classroom visits from vendors and product representatives
