Course Description: | Develop awareness of human dimensions, spatial organization and the importance of physical and psychological characteristics of people. Ergonomics, building codes, ADA factors and universal design will be studied along with programming methods of gathering and organizing data for solving design problems and creating appropriate spatial relationships & furniture layouts for residential and commercial projects. |

I. Develop a clear understanding of the application of the elements and principles of design and the design process
II. Develop an awareness of environmental concerns in the industry
III. Understand the special relationships between human beings, furnishings and the built environment through programming and adjacency research
IV. Understand Universal Design standards & ergonomic concepts and their effect on productivity for human beings
V. Understand and implement building codes, ADA factors and Universal Design to create spaces for Residential and Commercial design projects
VI. Develop strong skills in programming, schematic design and design development, through space planning exercises, to achieve a more creative approach to problem solving
I. Elements and Principles of Design & The Design Process
a. Review light, color, space, line, form, and texture
b. Review all stages within the Design Process
II. Environmental practices and materials
a. Describe the impact of design on the environment
b. Discuss planning factors that contribute to energy, financial and time savings for clients
c. Illustrate the appropriate use of materials and planning concepts
III. Human Factors
a. Illustrate concepts of how people relate to each other and their environment in commercial and residential spaces
i. Review and implement planning for Social Zones
ii. Review and implement planning for Support and Work Area
iii. Review and implement planning for Private Spaces
b. Create client programs and adjacency charts
c. Identify how lighting fundamentals and mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems relate to interior spaces, the productivity of inhabitants and energy efficiency
IV. Codes and Standards for Barrier Free Design
a. Identify and implement local, state and national building codes based on residential and commercial interior design projects
b. Identify and implement barrier free and universal design standards
V. Development of problem solving skills
a. Provide exercises for practicing the beginning stages of the Design Process
b. Practice and research techniques for efficient and creative problem solving related to residential and commercial interior design projects.
