Course Description: | Introduces interior finish materials used as a means of functional and aesthetic application by the interior designer. Students will develop skills to specify appropriate materials, estimate quantities, develop costs and understand installation and removal associated with residential and commercial finishes, with a focus on sustainability. |

. Recognize, understand and appropriately specify interior finish materials based on Residential and Commercial interior design projects. Understand the differences between appropriate finish materials for varying types of design projects such as Residential, Medical/Healthcare, Hospitality, Corporate and Retail.
II. Understand surface preparation and installation methods/conditions based on Residential and Commercial interior design projects.
III. Be aware of codes, laws and regulations regarding finish materials
IV. Be aware of environmental issues regarding finish materials including creation, installation, removal and disposal & recycling
V. Understand how to read and create complete finish material specifications
VI. Understand how to measure and estimate quantities for interior finish materials
VII. Understand costs associated with interior finish materials and their installation
I. Appropriate Material Selection & Specification
a. Understand and apply appropriate finishes based on location and project type
II. Surface Preparation and Installation
a. Research and understand appropriate surface preparation
b. Research and understand appropriate use of adhesives and glues
c. Research and understand appropriate use of finishes, sealants and topcoats
d. Understand environmental impact of installation methods and materials
III. Codes and Regulations
a. Create awareness of appropriate finish material use based on local, state and national building codes and ADA standards
IV. Sustainability
a. Create awareness of environmental impact
b. Understand process of creation or growth of product, installation, lifespan, removal and disposal of materials used in interior environments
V. Finish Specifications
a. Create complete interior finish specifications based on Residential and Commercial projects
VI. Measuring and Estimating
a. Practice taking accurate measurements and creating estimates for ordering interior finish materials
VII. Costs
a. Research and apply appropriate costs for materials and installation based on accurate measurements
b. Understand pricing levels of net, retail, cost-plus and specialty designer discounts
