  Title:Space Planning
  Long Title:Space Planning
  Course Description:Teaches the principles and factors of space planning and practices the space planning process through residential and light commercial applications. Students are introduced to interior architecture, human factors, code requirements and functional space. Use of bubble diagrams, two and three dimensional design fundamentals and freehand ink presentation techniques are also included to communicate design solutions.

 I. Integrate client needs, code requirements and imposed constraints into a functional, aesthetically appropriate interior space. (I-V)
 II. Create relationships between plan components and architectural elements. (II)
 III. Introduce good proportion and scale to interior volumes. (I)
 IV. Use the bubble diagramming process to explore room/area location and square footage allocation. (IV)
 V. Factor human psychology/emotional needs and behavior patterns into space plan solutions. (III)
 VI. Present space plan drawings using freehand ink techniques (V, VI)


 I. Elements & Principles
 
 A.  Participate in interactive presentation and review application of elements and principles in design
 B.  Visit a residence and complete an assignment regarding observed design elements and principles.
 C.  Visit a commercial building and complete an assignment regarding observed design elements and principles.
 D.  Apply design elements and principles while space planning and developing interior design solutions for residential and commercial projects.
 II.  Space Planning & Human Factors
 A.  Participate in interactive presentations regarding the space planning process and apply the process to residential and commercial projects.
 B.  Apply human factor aspects during the space planning and other processes of design for the residential and commercial projects.
 C.  Research and apply design aspects such as diversity of space perception, human dimensions, positive-negative space, required clearances, space-furniture scale and others.
 D.  Research and apply accessibility guidelines, code requirements,  and other available design information.
 III.  Programming
 A.  Create a program document for a residential project utilizing a required format based on textbook review and classroom instruction.
 B.  Create a program document for a commercial project utilizing a required format based on textbook review and classroom instruction.
 C.  Include project introduction, issues, needs, constraints, research analysis, summary with design goals and other programming information in the document.
 D.  In addition to the programming document, create design concepts using various conceptual design methods including graphics.
 IV. Schematic Design
 A. Create a criteria matrix to organize sizes, adjacencies and other information for the required spaces identified in the program document for the residential and commercial projects..
 B.  Create space planning diagrams such as relational diagrams, zoning diagrams, and bubble diagrams.
 C.  Develop a blocking plan or plans for each of the projects.
 D.  Develop a preliminary floor plan drawing for each project and include preliminary furniture arrangements.  Calculate stair and plumbing fixture requirements based on codes.
 V.  Design Development
 A.  Draw a design development plan based on further development and refinement of the preliminary plan for the residential and the commercial projects.
 B. Review and revise space planning and human factor aspects.
 C. Select products including furniture, plumbing fixtures, cabinetry, appliances, accessories, art work and room finishes for the projects.
 D. Define materials, colors, sizes, locations and other information for the products selected for each project.
 VI. Presentation Techniques
 A.  Create presentation graphics for the residential project and for the commercial project.  Color render and label the design development floor plan including furnishings, countertops, floor finishes, appliances, and other appropriate items.
 B.  Include labeled color-material samples for selected products and other drawings such as color rendered perspective sketches and wall elevations as part of the graphic presentations for each project.
 C.  Build a scale model of the residence
 D.  Verbally present the design for each project utilizing the graphics and verbal clarity.
