Course Description: | Offers a study of interiors and furnishings from the medieval period to the Revival styles of the mid-eighteenth century to the contemporary classics used in modern interiors today. The course provides study of interior and exterior architectural elements, furniture, design motifs and ornamentation, fine arts and construction methods as it relates to the cultural, political, social, technological and economic conditions of the times. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Recognize and identify characteristic motifs, design elements, artwork, furniture and architectural elements of the major historical periods
2. Understand how political, religious, social & economical movements, as well as geographical location, impacted styles of architecture, design and furnishings through history
3. Create awareness of historical period design elements used in architecture and interior furnishings in modern environments
4. Identify major historical furniture styles and components
5. Identify major contemporary furnishings and their designers
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Identifying Characteristics
a. Study and identify major motifs, design elements, artwork, furniture styling and key architectural elements as they relate to the major historical periods. Including:
i. Middle Ages
ii. Italian Renaissance
iii. The French Periods
iv. The English Periods
v. The American Periods
vi. Contemporary
II. Historical Impact on architecture, design and furnishings
a. Study and research how political, religious, social and economical movements impacted styles, techniques and ideals regarding design and furnishings
b. Understand how geographical location impacted architecture and design
III. Comparing historical design elements to modern environments
a. Apply historical design elements and furnishings to today's environments
b. Recognize key furniture styles from the major historical periods
IV. Contemporary furnishings and designers
a. Study and recognize major contemporary furnishings and their designers
b. Study and recognize major contemporary buildings and their architects and designers
c. Understand the impact of contemporary architecture and design on today's interior and furniture design
