  Course Description:Identifies and familiarizes students with specific advanced subjects of industrial process valve maintenance and instrumentation. The study includes calibration, configuration, troubleshooting, and use of valves with instrumentation. The course also discusses the concepts of contemporary plant control systems and commonly used industrial process measurement and control communication protocols and topologies related to valve control. The course will cover maintenance and operation of gate, the globe, ball, plug, check and special-purpose valves. The course details actuators and various accessories related to valve maintenance and control and explained to valve selection based on application. A major paper and associated lab project will be required for completion.

 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I.      Identify multiple types of control valves used in industry processes.
 II.     Be able to examine a typical measurement or control loop, determine a troubleshooting plan, and use the strategy to locate and correct valve problems and deficiencies.
 III.    Be able to examine the configuration of valves and discuss the factors that affect the selection of valve materials.
 IV.     Described the various methods of connecting valves to piping systems for process control.
 V.      Identify the various types of common valves and the operating characteristics of each.
 VI.     Explain general maintenance and repair procedures for different types of valves.
 VII.    Identify several types of specialty valves and their operating characteristics; discuss the installation, maintenance and repair of specialty valves.
 VIII.   Explain the function and operation of the valve actuator.
 IX.     Identify various types of valve actuators and described the installation, maintenance and repair of each.
 X       Discuss the operating characteristics of various accessories, including gauges, meters, accumulators, and a receivers.
 XI.     Name the five major uses of valves in piping systems and identify the types of valves best suited for each.
 XII.    Identify and explained the factors that determine the selection of a valve for a given application.
