Course Description: | Provide the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in preparation for a nationally recognized personal training certification approved by the Colorado Community College System. These Certifications are limited to the following: ACSM, ACE, NSCA, NCSF, AFAA, and AEA. Upon certification, the student will have the ability to develop and implement exercise programs for healthy populations and/or those individuals with medical clearance to exercise. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Possess a concrete foundation of relevant fitness knowledge
2. Demonstrate knowledge of and apply principles of exercise science, human anatomy & physiology,
biomechanics of movement, and exercise instruction.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of proper screening techniques, identify individuals with risk factors,
requiring a doctor or medical referral, and any possible contraindications of exercise.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of safe and effective methods of training for cardio respiratory fitness,
muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and injury prevention techniques.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of various pedagogical techniques when teaching cognitive, psychomotor
and affective skills to individuals and group settings.
6. Effectively use sport and exercise psychology theories to assist individuals with lifestyle behavior
modification, goal setting and motivation.
7. Demonstrate the ability to individualize exercise instruction based on special population needs.
8. Demonstrate proper usage of various commercial fitness machines and equipment using appropriate
exercise guidelines and spotting techniques.
9. Safely provide basic nutritional information to apparently healthy individuals to assist with
lifestyle changes, weight management and eating for performance.
10. Exhibit communications skills necessary for a client and trainer relationship.
11. Promote themselves and their personal training business using current marketing strategies,
technology and resources that are available to them.
12. Demonstrate knowledge on the importance of record keeping, informed consent and lawsuit prevention.
13. Demonstrate knowledge of basic liability issues in the field of personal training including negligence,
standard of care, duty to act, personal insurance, expert witnesses and risk management.
14. Demonstrate the importance of emergency preparedness and procedures in the event of an emergency situation.
15. Demonstrate knowledge of hydrodynamics and the physical laws as they relate to water.
