Course Description: | Provides the student with those skills and emergency medical care techniques used by guides, trip leaders and others providing primary care in backcountry setting. The student will be able to respond correctly to those medical and trauma situations commonly encountered when entry into the EMS system is delayed or unlikely. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Detect risks commonly associated with back country travel.
II. Recognize signs and symptoms for common back country injuries and illnesses.
III. Render appropriate medical care with equipment available for common injuries and illnesses.
IV. Demonstrate appropriate treatment and evacuation procedures for patients in isolated areas.
V. Assess risks that are commonly associated with back country travel.
VI. Differentiate between various medical illnesses and injuries that may occur with back country travel.
VII. Develop treatment plans for injuries and illnesses covered in course materials.
VIII. Demonstrate correct treatment plans for scenarios presented in class.
IX. Demonstrate proficiency in using, non-conventional equipment for packaging and transporting patients.
X Carry out treatment plans for extended periods of time, as encountered in the back country.
XI. Differentiate between the need for transporting patients and the need for leaving patients and going for assistance.
