  Course Description:Introduces the need for safety in the workplace and the role that OSHA has in helping to prevent and eliminate work-related injuries. Introduces the need for Emergency Action Plans, the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hand and Power tool Safety practices. Covers the use of Stairways and Ladders and Electrical Safety. Covers a variety of relevant first aid topics.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 
 1. Describe what OSHA is and its role on the job site.
 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the need for Exit routes, Egress and Fire protection.
 3. Demonstrate how to prepare an Emergency Action plan, how to inspect and properly wear Personal Protective Equipment.
 4. Demonstrate the proper use of Hand and Power tools, how to keep stairways and ladders safe and how to look out for electrical safety.
 5. Demonstrate an understanding of first aid procedures.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I. Introduction to OSHA
      a. Explain what OSHA is and does.
      b. Name the publication that contains the OSHA standards.
      c. List employer responsibilities required by the OSHA standards
      d. Summarize the rights and responsibilities of the worker
      e. Describe where to find help from OSHA.
 II. Emergency Action Plans
      a. Describe the parts to an appropriate exit route.
      b. Discuss the characteristics of an effective exit route.
      c. Explain the need for developing an emergency action plan.
      d. Explain the different classes of fire extinguishers and their proper maintenance.
 III. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
      a. Discuss the primary means of protection before PPE is required.
      b. Identify the parts needed for an appropriate PPE program.
      c. Identify hazards where PPE is needed.
 IV. Hand and Power Tools Safety
      a. Identify the precautions that are essential to the safe use of:
      b. Hand tools
      c. Power tools
      d. Abrasive wheels and tools
      e. Pneumatically powered tools
      f. Liquid fuel tools
      g. Hydraulically powered tools
      h. Powder actuated tools
      i. Discuss guarding techniques of principles that apply to hand and power tools.
 V. Stairways and Ladders
      a. Discuss the hazards that are predominant when using stairs of ladders
      b. Discus the safety guidelines dealing with stairs and ladders
 VI. Electrical Safety
      a. Discuss the types of injuries that may result from contact with electricity
      b. Identify the warning signs that an electrical hazard exists
      c. Discuss methods of protection from electrical hazards.
