  Title:Hispanic Arts of Southwest
  Long Title:Hispanic Arts of the American Southwest
  Course Description:Examines the history, visual arts and permanency of the Hispanic culture of the American Southwest. Through the study of historical sequences, major artistic expressions dating from 1598 and aspects of literature of the contempoary Hispanic society students will gain an insight into the Hispanic cultural contributions to the Southwest.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
         A.      Interpret works of the visual arts, music, literature and videos of the Hispanic Southwest by analyzing their stylistic features.
         B.      Explain some of the causes of the specific stylistic changes to the visual arts, music, literature.
         C.      Explain how the major values of specific historical eras are reflected in the artistic expression of the time.
         D.      Explain how the geographic, economic, social, political, religious, intellectual or scientific events of this or other historical periods might have influenced the values of artistic stages and expressions.
         E.      Compare and contrast the basic cultural values of the historical periods of the Hispanic Southwest with some of the cultural values of the 19th, 20th and now 21st Century Anglo-American society.
         F.      Recognize the important contributions of the tri-cultural heritage of the Southwest.
         G.      Describe the role that religion, (especially Catholicism), plays in the development, continuance and preservation of Hispanic Arts.
         H.      Explain causes and effects of Spanish exploration and colonization of the American Southwest and to and recognize as well as define the effects within the evolution of the Native American Arts.
         I.      Express some of the cultural understandings and values reflected in particular architectural styles;  evaluate the architecture in accordance to basic elements of visual arts and define some of the environmental and geographical influences on the architectural style.
         J.      Reflect on the culture of the Brothers of Light, The Brothers of Blood,. Los Penitentes and their role in the development and perpetuation of Hispanic religious art.
         K.      Analyze a novel in according to its basic elements of style, content and relevance to cultural values.
