Course Description: | Explores important themes in American social and cultural history through the study of Jazz music, as well as examines how popular and critical tastes are reflections of artistic, cultural, sexual, economic and ideological sensibilities at the time of its production. Emphasis is placed on understanding the social and cultural contexts of the music rather than on a rigorous understanding of the music itself. |

STANDARD COMPETENICES
1. Demonstrate understanding of the history of Jazz music, 1910 to the present.
2. Compare and contrast Jazz music and culture to the history of 20th Century America.
3. Demonstrate critical listening skills in order to identify certain stylistic features of different genres of Jazz music
4. Demonstrate critical listening skills in order to identify key composers, performers and pieces in the history of Jazz
5. Demonstrate the ability to read literature and to analyze music and societal trends critically.
