  Course Description:Studies the relationships among film’s stylistic systems, narrative systems and audience reception. Students view, discuss and critically analyze a variety of films which represent a variety of genres and themes. The course incorporates the vocabulary of stylistic systems (for instance, cinematography and editing) and narrative systems (for instance, story structure and character motivation) as both relate to the kinds of meanings a film conveys. This course is approved as part of the Colorado Statewide Guaranteed transfer curriculum: GT:AH2.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements that comprise film through assigned reading and guided viewing and discussion.
 2. Apply the vocabulary of film’s stylistic and narrative systems in speaking and writing.
 3. Identify the relationships among the stylistic systems, narrative systems and audience reception through reading, writing listening viewing and discussing examples of film.
 4. Analyze film techniques and narrative by viewing, discussing and write about a variety of films of different genres.
 5. Demonstrate how to write, speak and think critically about cinema and film-related issues by studying assigned examples, participating in classroom discussions and completing written assignments.
