Course Description: | Provides students with a foundation in starting an inexperienced horse under saddle. Students will progress to riding the horse out of the round pen/arena while isolating cues to move the shoulders, rib cage (lateral movement) and hips at the walk, jog and lope. |

STANDARD COMPENTENCIES:
1. Develop a training plan.
2. Identify and demonstrate a round pen procedure to establish forward momentum, yielding and hip control.
3. Demonstrate various desensitization techniques to mimic external stimuli in a trail setting.
4. Demonstrate proper cues to transition the horse from the walk, jog and lope from the ground and while riding.
5. Demonstrate proper saddling procedure on both sides of the horse.
6. Demonstrate safe mounting techniques.
7. Demonstrate proper lunging technique.
8. Demonstrate proper cues to achieve lateral flexion by the horse
9. Demonstrate proper hand and leg cues to move the shoulders, rib cage (lateral movement) and hips at the walk, jog and lope.
10. Demonstrate proper hand and leg cues to achieve vertical flexion at the walk, jog and lope.
11. Evaluate the training plan.
12. Maintain weekly logs to evaluate what procedures worked to monitor the horse’s performance.
