Course Description: | Provides the student with the skills to train the horse (body control). The student progresses to start the horse on barrels. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to take a green young horse or an older horse and sufficiently start it on the barrels.

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of horse training equipment
2. Demonstrate correct rider’s body position on a horse
3. Apply the correct use of training aids
4. Recognize correct horse body position
5. Execute the following maneuvers-- direct arc, counter arc, two tracking, standing a horse’s shoulders up, leads on the straight, hip control, collection.
6. Demonstrate Left and Rights on barrels.

A. Saddles, blankets, bridles and various bits
B. Protective equipment for the horse
II. Demonstrate correct rider’s body position on a horse
A. Maintaining balance – staying in the middle of the horse
B. Leg and hand position
III. Apply the correct use of training aids
A. Different types of training equipment, German Martingale, tie downs, draw reins and various bits
B. Using different bridles
C. When and how to use training equipment
D. Different signals training aids send to the horse
IV. Recognize correct horse body position
A. Correct shoulder position of the horse
B. Correct rib position of the horse
C. Correct hip position of the horse
D. Correct head and neck position of the horse
V. Execute various maneuvers.
