Course Description: | Examines death from the perspectives of the dying individual, the bereaved and the caregivers. The course will focus on sociological, cultural, spiritual, development and psychological aspects of dying and bereavement. It will also include study of various groups and their relationships to death and disposition, funerals and other rites. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Discuss how current and historical American cultures affect individual and societal interpretations of death.
II. Understand the interpretation of dying from the viewpoints of the dying individual and of loved ones, utilizing a developmental approach.
III. Describe the stages of dying and grieving.
IV. Discuss the role of religion in determining the dying and grieving behaviors in a society.
V. Discuss and identify sociological customs and tradition and how these apply to death rituals.
VI. Discuss the differences in grieving behaviors based on how and when an individual dies.
VII. Discuss the caregiver¿s role in dying and bereavement.
VIII. Become familiar with legal implications related to death and dying.
IX. Define signs of functional and dysfunctional grieving.
X Understand the impact of biomedical and ethical issues upon the dying, their loved ones, and society.
XI. Discuss how caregivers can care for themselves.
XII. Develop a personal philosophy of death.
XIII. Recognize and develop a better understanding of personal resources for coping with loss situations.
XIV. Describe the unique needs of a school when influenced by death.
